Judge Dredd is being rebooted on film, with the upcoming film Dredd directed by Pete Travis and starring Karl Urban in the title role previously held by Sylvester Stallone. Urban takes more of a Clint Eastwood approach to the lead character than Stallone did and it plays out rather well.
The movie takes place in Mega-City One, population 800 million. Crime boss Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) controls the drug Slo-Mow, which is all the rage in the city. (This should look exceptionally well in 3-D.) The drug, which makes time appear to slow down for its users, makes for some great visuals in the trailer, but unfortunately for Dredd, it’s also rotting the city to its core.
Not one to take things like that lightly, Dredd employs powerful psychic rookie, Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) to play judge, jury and executioner with him by infiltrating the 200-story skyscraper at the center of the Ma-Ma’s criminal empire. (Ma-Ma’s past is beyond 50 Shades of Grey as she is a prostitute turned drug lord.)
Take a look at the action filled trailer and let us know what you think. The movie opens everywhere on Friday, September 21st, 2012.
