Aside from making some of the most insane collectables on the planet, Sideshow Collectables has a video series called “Modern Collector” in which they interview various people and talk to them about their collections and passion for collecting. Their latest Modern Collector video is outstanding and features Dr Mark Glassy.
By day: Dr. Glassy is the Chief Executive Officer of Nascent Biologics, Inc., the Director of and Professor at the Integrated Medical Science Association Foundation , and is on the faculty of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department and Bioscience Department. (Yes, he is a brilliant individual!)
Dr. Glassy has over 160 publications in the scientific and medical literature, is the inventor of several issued patents in the human antibody field, is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, HUMAN ANTIBODIES, and the Program Chairman of the meeting series, “The International Conference on Human Antibodies and Hybridomas”.
Glassy is the inventor of Pritumumab, the first human antibody used to treat a cancer patient. and is the recipient of the 2003 Arthur Furst Award. He is also the author of the book, “The Biology of Science Fiction Cinema”.
By night: Glassy enters the world of science fiction and has amassed one of the world’s largest collections of SF. At over 80,000 items the major themes covered in the collection are literature, art, film, and toys. In his spare time, he builds models and dioramas of his favorite fantasy characters, which are depicted on his website.
To say his collection is impressive is a complete understatement. I use to think I collected but now I barely consider myself a mere “dabbler“. I guess the old adage, “Work Hard, Play Hard” really applies here. I think my head would explode from sheer geek overload if I was ever fortunate enough to view his collection in person. Take a look at this awesome video from Sideshow Collectibles that documents Dr Glassy’s collection and gives us some insight into the man himself.
