When we first heard at last year’s New York Comic Con, that writer extraordinaire, Scott Snyder and DC’s legendary artist Jim Lee were collaborating on the upcoming Superman Unchained series, my head nearly exploded. Seriously? These two working on the same title is like Luke and Han, Holmes and Watson or Mulder and Scully working together. Ok… that last reference wasn’t very poignant but you get the point.
This year is a big, BIG year for Krypton’s favorite son. This year The Man of Steel has a birthday and there will be a lot of candles on his cake. 75 to be exact! DC of course is well aware of this and has brilliantly scheduled the release of the first issue of Superman Unchained on Wednesday June 12, a mere two days before the release of Warner Bros. upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel directed by Zach Snyder and staring Henry Cavill. (I CAN’T WAIT THAT LONG!)
Here is what Jim Lee had to say about the project. “As a huge fan of Scott’s writing, I’m looking forward to drawing Superman as much as I am reading Scott’s story as it unfolds,” Lee said. “Scott’s crafted a truly epic, yet personal story which will demonstrate without a doubt why Superman remains the most iconic hero of the modern age. 2013 is gonna absolutely rock!”
Readers will get their first look at the new series in a special for this year’s “Free Comic Book Day” on May 4th. Snyder will also be writing back-up stories at the end of each issue with another talented artist Dustin Nguyen.
Scott Snyder teased this. “I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say it’s the Superman story I’d write if I only ever got one chance to write the character. It’s an exploration of everything I love and am fascinated by about him. Like Court of Owls for Batman, it’s a character piece for Clark – it’s going to challenge him to his core. And it’s definitely epic in scope, with huge action and drama – the biggest and most earth shaking action I’ve ever done. Can’t wait to see what you all think of it. Couldn’t be more grateful or excited to get the chance to make this one!”
Snyder has also said this: “The way to approach a character as iconic as him is you just come at it from a standpoint of what you love the most about the character, and then write a story that explores that, tear it down and build it back up.”
“I know conceptually why he admires Lois Lane, but then when you’re writing them and you feel the chemistry between them and it comes to life on the page, it’s always these little bursts of surprises that have been a joy to discover with him.”
I haven’t been this amped for a comic since Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns series. I don’t want to go to far out on a limb here but I have a strong feeling that we are in for something really special with this story. (No S!it right?)
Watch this cool video with Scott and Jim as they talk candidly about the project and get me even MORE excited for this incredible project.
