It’s official, Zach Snyder has his Batman for his HIGHLY anticipated Superman sequel and it’s going to be Ben Affleck. Deadline is reporting that the search is over and the ink is drying on the contracts. The sequel will be the first time that the two leaders of the DC Universe have ever met on film. The studio made the announcement today along with the official release date of July 17, 2015. (The story is being scripted by David S. Goyer from a story he co-created with Zack Snyder.)
With “Man of Steel,” Snyder successfully relaunched the Superman franchise which to date, has earned more than $650 million worldwide and continues to bring in the bucks. Now Snyder takes on the daunting task of creating an original vision of Batman and his world. (New Batcave, new costume, new Batmobile, new utility belt, new Alfred, you name it, he has to come up with it! My head is spinning just thinking about it.)
Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production for Warner Bros Pictures stated, “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”
Zach Snyder said, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”
Ok, so there it is. No more guessing, wondering, debating. Ben Affleck WILL be The Dark Knight. In reading Snyder’s statement I noticed two phrases that stuck out to me, “older and wiser” and “bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter“. This leads me to believe that earlier rumors of a Frank Miller story tie-in seem to be true. (If you don’t know about Miller’s story then you don’t even deserve to go see this movie when it comes out!)
- You are talking about their two biggest icons, on the screen together, for the first time.
- Failure to pull this off sinks all the hard work and ground that they gained with “Man of Steel”
- It also takes all the wind out of any upcoming Batman/ Dark Knight films
- It will also give Marvel an added “boost” with their superhero films and to date, they are ahead of DC in this category.
One thing I would like to see is Zach Snyder and David Goyer bring in comic genius Scott Snyder on the project. His work with DC has been nothing short of OUTSTANDING. I know, I know, there is a huge difference between writing a fantastic comic book story and delivering a well crafted movie BUT Scott has proven himself to come up with some groundbreaking storylines and his feedback could prove to be invaluable AND lend credibility to the throngs of DC fans. I DO hope they don’t make Affleck do the raspy voice like Bale did. I loved, loved, LOVED Nolan’s films but that voice….well…it kinda took me outta some of the scenes.
What do YOU think about this announcement? Happy, frustrated? Is there anyone else you would RATHER see take on this role? Let me know down in the comments section.
In related news, still no word on whether or not Jennifer Garner will reprise her role as Elektra but never say never.
