TGID or as I like to say, “Thank God it’s Doaly!” You survived the work week and now it’s time for another exclusive artist interview from BLURPPY. Doaly is another new member to the unstoppable artistic force known as the Poster Posse and he came out SWINGING with a record setting 6 prints for Pacific Rim! (You can see them HERE and HERE.) He is already hard at work on our top secret, level 9 clearance, Poster Posse project #4 (again with multiple prints) but we took some time to get to know him a bit better before then. Sit back, grab your favorite snack and learn about this fantastic UK based artist who seems to have the philosophy….”More is more” (…and I like it.)
BLURPPY – How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?
Doaly – I would say it’s been just over a year now, I think like a lot of artists/designers I wanted something unique for my wall and it snowballed from there.
BLURPPY – Speaking of which, my walls need your Pacific Rim art! Let me know if you ever make some AP’s! Is art your full time job? If not, what else do you do?
Doaly – I’m lucky enough to have been working as a web/graphic designer for the last 14 years, I’ve always been a doodler from an early age it’s just now I doodle as a career.
BLURPPY – HaHAhA…You said “doodle“. (I’m easily amused and very simple minded.) Whose work do you admire or collect?
Doaly – Oooooh hard one, off the top of my head as the list could go on for forever, Olly Moss, Gary Pullin, Martin Ansin, Mike Mitchel, These are the big hitters of the industry and I love seeing what they come out with next. But lately I would have to say the members of the Poster Posse have been amazing. It’s great to see people being so selfless and encouraging with each others work, I’m honored to be a part of the gang.
BLURPPY – Some day… some day very soon… people will add names from the Poster Posse to that list of “big hitters“, it’s only a matter of time. What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?
Doaly – It would have to be Lord of the Rings by Olly Moss, I love a piece that makes the viewer connect the dots and see something that’s not completely obvious at a first glance, it’s the double take effect that I love about his work.
BLURPPY – Olly is a clever lad. I love the amount of thought that goes into his work. With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh?
Doaly – By my nature I get bored very easily by routine and especially of my own work that’s why I think I’ve not developed a personal style, I like to try new things and push myself technically to do more, plus I feel the style in which you produce the piece has as much to do with the subject matter as anything else. If I’m creating a print for a film from a particular era I want the art style to reflect that era in someway.
BLURPPY – You may not have a “style” per say but I do think your work is recognizable. Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Project, what is your dream project?
Doaly – I love horror so if I could get a gig working on re-imaging Stephen King book covers then I’d be as happy as Larry (who is this Larry btw and why is he so happy?)
BLURPPY – Hey, my friend Larry is a HUGE Stephen King fan, you must have been channeling him. If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?
Doaly – I think I’d always be doing something creative if it wasn’t design or art then I have a real love of photography. I often pull my camera out on the weekend so I’d only be more than happy to pursue that field further, not wedding photography though haha.
BLURPPY – Not that there is anything WRONG with wedding photography but I get what your saying. What movies are you excited to see this year/ next year?
Doaly – With so many geek-tastic movies coming out here’s a few, X-men Days of Future Past, Robocop, 47 Ronin, Thor 2… I may even take my replica Mjolnir hammer to opening night…
BLURPPY – …and get arrested for bringing a weapon from the God’s into a theater. You MAY want to rethink that one. What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?
Doaly – I would say it would be my Joker print and mainly because at the time I hadn’t put digital pen to paper before when it came to any type of painting so I was really pleased with the outcome.
BLURPPY – Hands down one of my favorite character performances of all time. Ledger OWNS that roll for eternity. (Love your print by the way.) What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?
Doaly – I’m pretty new to the scene but I guess it’s lazy art, reproducing what Hollywood has already done and re-packaging it. I try to have an idea behind my work, a message or emotion I want to convey that someone else has not done or not done well enough beforehand. If your piece is not trying to do something new then why do it?
BLURPPY – So basically, if your not going to give 110%, then why bother? Good advice. What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?
Doaly – I think one of the biggest has been being invited to be apart of the Poster Posse, being recognized by your peers is pretty damn amazing, I guess 2nd to that is having my Pacific Rim posters displays along side work by Yoji Shinkawa of Metal Gear fame, I’ve loved his art style from day one and was shocked to have my work next to his. (I’m not worth I’m not worthy)
BLURPPY – I agree, the Poster Posse is a very special group of people. What was your most embarrassing moment as an artist?
Doaly – I think it was my Man of Steel set of posters, which had a typo in it, I could have died when it was pointed out but luckily I hadn’t gone to print at this point.
BLURPPY – What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?
Doaly – I’ve not had many interviews in fact this is number 2 so let’s go with “what’s your pet peeve”
BLURPPY – What do you have on tap for the rest of 2013 and don’t give us that line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk about it yet”
Doaly – Well there’s 2 projects I can’t talk about but I can say I’ll be working with some film makers to produce art for their new projects, also a vanity project of mine is The Hairy face of Hollywood. I’ll be producing regular portraits of movie characters but with a twist, I’ll only be drawing their facial hair so anything from Wolverines mutton chops to Ned Flander’s soup strainer will be showcased. Oh and I’ll be working with a couple of galleries for the first time.
- DC or Marvel? The child in me would say Marvel then adult me would slap him and say DC.
- Most Desired Super Power? Mind control like Prof X but I’d like to keep my legs if possible.
- Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why? Ja Ja Binks of course, lol I’m just messing with you. Lando Calrissian the coolest cat in the whole galaxy.
- Best movie snack? Popcorn half sweet half salty I like a surprise.
- Growing up, what was your favorite TV show? The Amazing Spiderman!!!
- What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on? There’s my Website – doaly.co.uk but if you want to see what’s happening real time, ideas, sketches and what not then my TWITTER and FACEBOOK page are a must.
- What’s your favorite pop culture event? I’m a big gamer so it would have to be E3, I wish the UK had events on the scale of E3 or Comic Con.
- Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc) Dare I say Batman, there’s so much depth to the character, and he’s willing to make the hard choices when no one else will, you can’t help but want to be him if only for the utility belt and Cat Woman.
- Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner prequel? Not that I totally agree with a prequel but I’d say Blade Runner, Star Wars has just become a money making machine in my view (bring on the hate)
WOW, I have a feeling that Star Wars comment will haunt him for awhile and I have to agree, Cat Woman looked pretty amazing on the Bat Pod in the last film. (Just saying.) Huge thanks to Doaly for taking the time to chat it up with us and stay tuned, I’m sure he will dazzle us with his prints for Poster Posse Project Phase 4!
