Rayman Legends is now available for next gen platforms, Xbox One and PS4 and we can’t stop playing it! Ubisoft’s hit game is packed with lush landscapes, excellent Easter eggs and non-stop action that will leave you, your family and friends hunkered down in front of your TV for hours upon hours.
We’ve been playing it at the office for about a week now and to be honest, the game is so captivating and addictive that we have been extending our breaks a little more each day, the deeper we get into the game. These two next gen versions each have a set of exclusive gameplay features. The Xbox One version (the one we are currently playing) includes 10 exclusive challenges to unlock new achievements.
These challenges require you to perform specific actions during a limited amount of time and are associated with various aspects of the game, such as player skills, co-op play, Kung Foot, and more. (We are obsessed with the Kung Foot soccer challenge. Lots of screaming, pushing and bragging goes on after these matches.)
The PlayStation®4 allows use of the controller’s touch pad for actions such as scratching Lucky Tickets, as well as a new Camera Mode. In this mode, players use the touch pad to freeze the screen and zoom in and out of the picture. Focusing on the hand-drawn visuals and animated-nuisances created during development, camera mode allows you to share these treasured moments with the rest of the community. Rayman Legends on PlayStation4 will also support Remote Play so you can continue playing from your PS Vita while the TV is turned off.
The playable characters include Rayman, Globox, Teensies, and Princesses. There are various unlockable versions of each with different costumes that make it fun to play different levels with these different and often hilarious characters. The levels include:
- Teensies In Trouble
- Toad Story
- Fiesta de los Muertos
- 20,000 Lums Under The Sea
- Olympus Maximus
- Living Dead Party
We found the Xbox One gameplay to be extremely smooth which is important when tackling the daily and weekly challenges. You can compete against friends locally or globally to try and win Gold, Bronze or Silver cups which earn you “lums” which in turn help you unlock various aspects throughout the game. Much like the Kung Foot soccer challenge, the daily and weekly challenges are extremely addictive and will have you cheering or cursing at your TV. (The best we have done to date is a Silver Cup. WE WANT THE GOLD!)
Lead Game Designer Emile Morel had this to say about the graphics for the next gen versions.
The power behind the Xbox One and the PS4 allows us to display the game’s textures without any compression on these consoles. This makes the game’s visuals even sharper than before and will allow players to see even more of the details and nuances our artists put into the textures of the game. These uncompressed textures highlight the hand-drawn style of the game’s visuals.
The enhanced power of these new consoles has also allowed us to do away with the loading times when entering or exiting a level. Jumping inside a painting will now start the level immediately. Jumping in and out of a level has never been faster and it’s a great feeling to have such a seamless experience. Navigating in the game now feels smoother and your gaming experience is never stopped by loading transitions. (Read his full interview HERE.)
