Poster Posse Member The Dark Inker Turns In A Brilliant Commissioned Piece For Scorsese’s “Gangs Of New York”

Commissioned prints are all the rage these days as collectors get more specific and more discerning about what they collect.  Flat files are filling up and wall space in homes are maxed out so if you can get your favorite artist to do a special print JUST the way you want it, then A-MEN!

Such was the case for Poster Posse member, The Dark Inker.  He was approached to do a print for Martin Scorsese’s 2002 feature, “Gangs Of New York.”  This violent, historical drama stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz.

The film was praised by fans and critics alike and was nominated for  a total of ten Academy Awards, five Golden Globes and twelve BAFTA Awards.  Here is what The Dark Inker had to say about the project.

Dark Inker Detail #2

This is my first private commission for a movie poster and to be honest when I first saw what movie the group were after I was well pleased!! I’m a big Scorsese fan and I love this movie!  I have a bit of a passion for history and love to watch movies set in a time gone by, so this was a no brainer when the group contacted me.

For me and I’m guessing many other people the star of the show is Bill the Butcher, such a classic movie character!  The group had a list of ideas for this poster and it was great fun trying to work there ideas into the design and also try to give it my own twist!  I’m sure the final design won’t be everyone’s cup of tea that loves the film but hopefully it works for some of the films fans!

As is the case with commissions, the curators know exactly what they want.  Here are a couple of concept images that The Dark Inker submitted until he turned in the final image. There are some aspects from these concepts incorporated into the final image and the end result is a fantastic print.

We love everything about this one.  The blood splattered ground, Daniel Day-Lewis draped with the flag, it all works and represents the movie wonderfully.  Congrats to those that swooped in and have this beautiful print as part of their collection.
