Crazy 4 Cult: Cult Movie Art By Gallery 1988 And Titan Books

Gallery 1988’s annual Crazy 4 Cult art show in LA has quickly become a phenomenon, with thousands of visitors, a million hits on its website, and high profile buyers including Joss Whedon, Guillermo del Toro, JJ Abrams, Kevin Smith and Edgar Wright. Why? Because the cream of the pop culture-influenced art scene – including Tom Whalen, Dave Perillo, Kevin Tong, Scott Campbell and N.C. Winters among a mass of others, come together to celebrate cult movies with art that is surprising, beautiful, very cool and HIGHLY sought after. This year Gallery 1988 took the show to NYC and wowed East Coast fans with another incredible show.

Shannon Bonatakis

This lavishly produced book presents the best of the first 4 years of the show, with art inspired by such movies as The Big Lebowski, Edward Scissorhands, Blade Runner, Donnie Darko, Clockwork Orange, Pulp Fiction and many more.

Scott Listfield

The introduction is provided by Kevin Smith, the man with among many things, the gift of gab.  Here is how Kevin starts off his intro.

“Over the course of my 40 years here on the big blue marble, I’ve had many original concepts hurled at me via all manner of man and media.  But in the pantheon of truly great ideas, only one stands out as so perfectly obvious, brilliant, creative and fun that I literally leapt into the air and stamped down hard on the ground with both feet- like a thwarted cartoon villain.”

Dave MacDowell

“My physical outburst-which is noteworthy for how rarely I ever exert myself, let alone express any emotion with motility of any kind – was an expression of both joy and rage:  joy because the idea was so fuc#ing keen, rage because I shoulda thought of that sh!t MYSELF, Crazy 4 Cult was that idea.”

Mike Mitchell

The book is in itself, a work of art.  It brilliantly displays the work of over 155 artists.  It’s hard to pick a favorite but the book makes it apparent just WHY this yearly event is such a massive success.  The overwhelming variety is mind boggling and Gallery 1988 has done a superb job at picking some of the best pieces from the first 4 years of the event.

Jason d’ Aquino

This book is a must-have for those that are just on the cusp of delving into the world of pop culture art.  It exposes you to a myriad of artists and will leave you counting the days until the next Crazy 4 Cult exhibit.
