With “Bates Motel” premiering on A&E next Monday, March 18th at 10/9C Executive Producer Carlton Cuse premiered the first 6 minutes down at SXSW. When asked about the show he said, “ It’s one part Friday Night Lights, one part Lost, [and] one part Twin Peaks“ DAMN! Sounds spot on to me! This is what else he had to say about the upcoming series.
“Norman Bates is one of the more iconic characters in the history of cinema. To me, the fun challenge of this project that Kerry Ehrin and I faced was not only bringing him and his family to life but also inventing the world around them – placing Norman and his family in the context of this really interesting town. White Pine Bay, is a beautiful looking – almost perfect – bucolic town on the Oregon coast. This is where Norma Louise Bates has bought a motel. She and her son Norman move here to re-invent their lives. But it turns out there is much more to this town than its surface appearance. Formerly a logging town, the economy, like many pacific coastal towns, now is fueled by the marijuana trade. Dark secrets and desires abound. Danger looms. The lines of morality and justice are shifting and elusive. And all of it – all the secrets of this town and its residents – are mysteries that unfold for the Bates family in ways that are shocking and surprising.”
To be honest, he had me with the Friday Night Lights, Lost and Twin Peaks comparisons. I will keep my fingers crossed that it truly does conjure up a remembrance to those fantastic shows. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill but if anyone can do it, Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin have beyond a decent shot.
So back to those first six minutes. Take a look below and then let us know what you think or expect from the show. Watch at your own risk. This one isn’t for the lil’ ones.
