“You know, there’s going to be sex, drugs, rock-n-roll… chips, dips, chains, whips… You know, your basic high school orgy type of thing. I mean, uh, I’m not talking candlewax on the nipples, or witchcraft or anything like that, no, no, no. Just a couple of hundred kids running around in their underwear, acting like complete animals.”
Lisa- Weird Science 1985
Deadline has reported that Universal is remaking the 1985 John Hughes classic, Weird Science. The original starred Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Kelly LeBrock, Bill Paxton, and the future Tony Stark himself, a 20 year old Robert Downey Jr.
“If your going to float an air biscuit let me know ok, float a what? if your going to fart, squeeze cheese let me know ok I’ll hit the fan.” – Gary
Hughes is one of those directors whose work is lauded by many with fond memories. From his time as a screenwriter on films like Mr. Mom and National Lampoon’s Vacation to when he REALLY took off as a director of teen-angst comedies like Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off , Hughes compiled a stable of movies that are still cherished over 20+ years later.
Universal reeeeeeeeealy needs to get this one right. To take on a Hughes film would be like someone saying they wanted to redo Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. It doesn’t SOUND like a good idea but only time will tell. There are SO many great scenes and lines from the original and the acting is still memorable to this day. Casting is going to play a key part if this one is to succeed. How do you fill Anthony Michael Hall’s or Kelly LeBrock’s shoes on this one?
Stay tuned to find out more as it is released. Keep your fingers crossed that Universal treats this project like a parent holding their first born baby for the very first time.
