Artist Marko Manev was born the year after I graduated from High School and he hails from Skopje, Macedonia. He’s a conceptual mixed-media artist, graphic designer & illustrator and his work is really starting to get noticed. Blurppy was fortunate enough to have him as a member of “The Original 8” (the members of the first Poster Posse Project) and we were excited to have him back for round two. Take a look and see what this gifted guru is all about.
BLURPPY – How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?
MM – I started doing pop culture art two years ago. At first I was hesitant but the constantly emerging pop-cult art gave me the courage to do so myself.
BLURPPY – I first saw your work with the stuff you did back in 2012 for Twentieth Century Fox’s movie, “Chronicle“. Is art your full time job? If not, what else do you do?
MM – Yes, finally art is my full time job. I worked in marketing for a couple of years but now art is my preoccupation.
BLURPPY – Congrats! I’m happy for you but I also say that with selfish intent because now that means we get to see more of you work. Whose work do you admire or collect?
MM – There are so many artist that inspire me it’s really hard to choose. I love Jock’s work, Olly Moss, Justin Van Genderen but lately I came across Gianmarco Magnani and his work is amaizing! Also I have to add that the new Poster Posse member Johnny Dobrowski has some really crazy awesome colors going in his works.
BLURPPY – What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?
MM – I really love “Fortress of Solitude” by JC Richard. Also Jock’s “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Shaun of the Dead” is something that I would love to hang on my wall.
BLURPPY – I can’t get enough of Jock’s work. I was fortunate enough to get this print above from Mondo at last years SDCC. As I walked away from their table, clutching my newest prized possession, someone offered me $200 for the print. I politely said, “Thanks but no thanks.” With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh?
MM – By following what other artists produce, analyzing what I like what I don’t and by doing what feels right.
BLURPPY – Well stay on target… stay on target! because I love what you have been putting out there. I especially love your Boba Fett piece that, as I recall, you “threw together at the last minute” for guys over at Planet Pulp’s Star Wars Show. Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Exclusive, what is your dream project?
MM – Doing covers for Marvel comics, working anything related to the new Star Wars movies, Hobbit movies and Metal Gear games. Also I would love to do something for Clerks 3, I’m a huge Kevin Smith fan!
BLURPPY – WHOA! You are all over the place there… which I like. It doesn’t limit you and provides you ample options to work on that dream project, very nice… If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?
MM – Film directing. That actually is my absolute dream job! I hope that I get a chance to do that some day…
BLURPPY – I never saw that coming but sounds like we have the makings of a “JJ Manev” on our hands. Given your fascination of movies, which ones are you excited to see this year?
Star Trek Into Darkness – Blurppy’s Poster Posse Project #2 – Marko Manev
MM – Star Trek Into Darkness. I was really exited to see Iron Man 3 but it seems I am one of the few that was disappointed in the logic of the movie so it bummed me out a bit. I have really high hopes for Man of Steel though, that thing looks amazing!
BLURPPY – I get goosebumps whenever I watch the Man of Steel trailer. I get an overwhelming sense of how difficult it had to be for him growing up with all these abilities on an alien planet, Earth. When young Clark asks his adopted Dad, Kevin Costner, if he should have let those kids die and his Dad says “Maybe“, it gets me every single time. Very heavy burden, can’t WAIT to see it. What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?
MM – Man of Steel. Because it wasn’t planned to be part of the series but it came to me pretty spontaneously. I was taking a short brake from the Noir series to make a quick sketch for a Man of Steel piece after I saw the first teaser. I did it in black and white and realized how it fits the series perfectly. I love how simple it is and yet has great impact.
BLURPPY – Speaking of your Noir Series it has been a massive success for you and VERY well received, CONGRATS! I’m really looking forward to your final 11th piece, centered around the X-men, that comes out next month with Bottleneck Gallery. (Stay tuned folks, we will announce it as soon as it becomes available.) What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?
MM – I dunno, I don’t think I have any…
BLURPPY – Nice, a positive perspective. I’m going to ask you that one again in a couple of years after you do your first Star Wars Print. What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?
MM – The camaraderie among artists! I love how supportive are my fellow art colleagues are of me.
World War Z –Blurppy’s Poster Posse Project #1 – Marko Manev
BLURPPY – Well great work elicits great praise. Kinda like “With great power comes great responsibility” but without the webs and costume. What was your most embarrassing moment?
MM – I really can’t remember. I’m a very analytical person so most of the things I do are thought through. There’s gotta be something, but nothing comes to mind…
BLURPPY – Must be nice. I embarrass myself almost daily but then again, I have a 7 year old and he kinda instigates a lot of it. What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?
MM – Every question that asks about something that I’m really passionate about is a favorite! I love talking about the things I love.
BLURPPY – What do you have on tap for the rest of 2013 and don’t give us that line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk about it yet”
MM – Well, I’m preparing several special things with Bottleneck Gallery. One of the things will be revealed pretty soon and I think people will like it, the rest will be revealed later this year. I’m continuing the Noir series with them. I’m doing couple of shows with Hero Complex Gallery. Also I am part of an iam8bit show that will be announced soon. I have other really really cool stuff in the works but dammit Blurppy, I can’t… say… more!
OK, OK, I get it but I don’t have to like it! Joe and Adam are great guys with fantastic galleries. Can’t wait to see what you guys have lined up.

Here are 10 quick questions…GO!
DC or Marvel?
Marvel + Batman
Most Desired Super Power?
SNIKT! Adamantium Claws!
Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why?
Luke Skywalker. Because I love stories where the protagonist becomes something great from nothing if he follows his passions and uses his full potential.
Best movie snack?
Growing up, what was your favorite TV show?
What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on?
What’s your favorite pop culture event?
Where I live there aren’t many pop culture events… I would really love to go to San Diego Comic Con though.
Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc)
The Silver Surfer! Why? Come on do we really need to go there? …Ok! Because he sacrifices himself without the blink of an eye to save his home world and his love and after he does that and receives the most awesome power ever, Galactus erases his memory of his home and his love. It’s just so tragic. What Kirby has done with the character design is a masterpiece! He is so minimal and so powerful! I mean, he doesn’t have a chest piece, he has silver skin! He doesn’t have a cape, he doesn’t fly, he doesn’t have a starship. He has a board! A board! How incredible and original is that? I love the Silver Surfer because he represents to me, the embodiment of the spirit for exploration and wonder!
Happy or leery about JJ Abrams directing the next Star Wars?
Absolutely happy! I love what he has done with Star Trek and how he was influenced by Star Wars (btw I’m a Star Wars guy). I love that he is such a big fan of the original trilogy and I think he will bring that old school feehttps://blurppy.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=26376&action=edit&message=10l into modern age quite successfully.
Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner sequel?
Do you really need to ask me that question after my answer on the previous?
Blurppy would like to thank Marko for taking the time to participate and deliver 2 incredible pieces for our second Poster Posse Project. I just received the good news that he is also onboard for the upcoming 3rd Poster Posse Project and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with. (Stay tuned for more info…)
