Later this month art and motorsports blend together as Dunlop’s “Art of Motorsport” invades London. Three esteemed artists will have their work on show at a London exhibition later this month, when Dunlop Tyres’ ‘Art of Motorsport’ goes on display at the 71A Gallery in Shoreditch, east London.
Award-winning illustrators Telegramme, Timba Smits and Raid 71 were commissioned by Dunlop to create a collection of bespoke artwork that brings the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race to life, while celebrating the tyre brand’s 90-year association with the historic race.
The series of illustrations, which will be on display for just one day, each capture a distinct era in Le Mans history – 1924: Dunlop’s first race win; 1950s: Most race wins; and 2014: The 90-year race win anniversary.
Telegramme – 1920’s
Individually, each illustration stands alone as a unique representation of that era, while collectively, the images depict the core visual elements of the world’s most famous endurance race – day, dusk and night.
Telegramme’s 1920s artwork portrays a couple picnicking by the roadside at dusk as the cars race past, while Timba Smits’ 1950s piece depicts the iconic daytime scene at Le Mans of drivers running to their vehicles ahead of the race start. Raid 71’s modern-day artwork, meanwhile, captures a series of light streams and flashbulbs that evoke the unique atmosphere of night-time racing at the famous circuit.

During the exhibition, art and motorsport lovers will be able to view the collection, as well as watching a behind-the-scenes film about their creation and having a chance to win limited edition signed prints of the artwork.
Timba Smits – 1950’s

Each image captures evocative moments in our proud association with the race and we hope that art and motorsport lovers alike will take the opportunity to come and see the artwork when it goes on display later this month.”
Chris Thornley, aka Raid 71, who created the 2014 artwork, said: “For me, being given the chance by Dunlop to visit Le Mans was an opportunity that was too good to turn down. Seeing first-hand the incredible work that goes on behind-the-scenes, as well as being able to enjoy the noise of the engines and the atmosphere in the crowd was a real inspiration and something which I wanted to bring across through the artwork. I’m really looking forward to seeing the final piece on display alongside the rest of the collection.”
