Exclusive! Dark Hall Mansion & Nicolas Delort Announce A Fantastic Holiday Print: “A Charlie Brown Christmas”

Earlier this year we gave you an exclusive look at a collaboration between Dark Hall Mansion and French artist extraordinaire  Nicolas Delort for a sensational print based on the Charles Schulz holiday classic, It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.”  As you can imagine, the project was a huge success and now DHM and Nicolas Delort have partnered once again on another officially licensed, Schulz holiday classic.

Queue the carolers and Vince Guaraldi’s timeless score because Dark Hall Mansion and Nicolas have delivered a touching print for the 1965, Charles Schulz classic, “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”  Delort has once again incorporated his black-and-white scratchboard technique to create an image that instantly evokes all the emotions of the holiday classic and blissfully takes us back to the simpler days of our youth.

Dark Hall Mansion will be offering 3 versions of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” by Nicolas Delort.  Each print is screen printed and measures 18″ X 24″ and they will go on sale at a random time between 9:30 AM PST and 12 PM PST on Tuesday, November 25th.  These gorgeous prints will only be available through Dark Hall Mansion’s OFFICIAL STORE.

We asked Nicolas about this project and here is what he had to say.

BLURPPY – “A Charlie Brown Christmas” is SUCH an iconic holiday special that I’d imagine it was a bit daunting to get it JUST right.  How hard was it for you to nail this one down?  How many versions did you go through before the final concept?

Nicolas Delort – I wanted to do Great Pumpkin and this one as a diptych of sorts right from the start and as soon as the Great Pumpkin sketch was approved, I had the idea for Charlie Brown Christmas.

(Here is a look at both first drafts together)

Both share the “boy and his faith” theme but while Great Pumpkin is all about Linus’ optimism and hope, Charlie Brown Christmas is more about Charlie’s disappointment and resentment towards what the holiday has become…so I thought it’d be interested to make two illustrations that would work next to one another.

The challenge on this one was that the image was to be more “luminous” (for lack of a better word) than Great Pumpkin and my style is usually pretty dark, so I had the idea to set the scene in the tree selling place and surround Charlie with garish electric lights.

BLURPPY – This holiday special really takes me down memory lane with fond remembrances from my youth.  What about you?  Was this part of your childhood?  If so, what are your memories surrounding it?

Nicolas Delort – Actually, not really, we were always more of a Grinch family, hah.

xmas-photoBLURPPY – Ooooooo is that a tease?  Can we expect a GRINCH print from you!?  (Fingers are crossed!)  What do you think it is about this holiday classic that still resonates with fans around the globe?

Nicolas Delort – I think a lot of us can relate to Charlie’s complaints, even moreso nowadays, when you have Christmas-themed merchandise or decorations in stores as early as October. Sure, Charlie is kind of a downer, but he makes some good points, even if you’re not a religious person.

Here is what Dark Hall Mansion had to say about the project in their official press release.  Dark Hall Mansion, under license from Peanuts Worldwide takes us back to our collective memory of gathering about the TV, awaiting Christmas and having Guaraldi’s first gentle jazz passages signal the season truly is upon us now. Charles Schulz’s 1965 masterpiece is timeless, precisely because its profound resonance is as relevant today as it will be in another fifty years and beyond. Artist Nicolas Delort, who brought such pathos to Dark Hall Mansion’s “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” again brings his distinctive and highly detailed style to bear rendering Charlie’s contemplation of the true meaning of Christmas a quiet and personal one.

Thank you collectors for again making this holiday season so special and enabling these artists to each year bring their gifts to bear in paying tribute to the Peanuts classics we all hold so dear. We’re honored you’ve made us a regular part of your holiday traditions and each year we look forward to receiving pictures of our releases up in your homes and apartments, part of your holiday decorations, with families and children, or just celebrating the season as it’s simply very humbling and we thank you, sincerely so.

As we do each season, from everyone here at the Mansion, we wish you and your loved ones a healthy, happy and wonderful Holiday season and a Most Merry Christmas, God bless you all.
