Creative director/ artist Brandon Johnson is passionate about film noir, fashion illustration, classic cartoons, the great men’s magazine artists, mid century design and architecture, punk rock, monsters and old Las Vegas. Being based smack-dab in the middle of Southern California, he is also an avid skateboarder.
We stumbled across a project that Brandon did for Acme Skateboards that perfectly shows off what happens when all the above collide and the end result is pretty spectacular. We reached out to Brandon to ask him about this project and here is what he had to say.
As a lifelong skater I was pretty stoked to get a chance to finally design some board graphics for ACME Board Company. I was even more stoked that the process resulted in a great personal friendship with company owner and former pro skater Jim Gray. The whole experience was super chill as we collaborated on all sorts of design ideas. In the end I came up with several dozen layouts of which we eventually produced about 10.
At the time ACME was one of the only skate companies still making boards from start to finish in the USA and it was cool to be there in person to watch the decks being made and printed. They all sold out pretty fast but I managed to hold onto a few for the archives. – Brandon Johnson
DAMN IT! I’m ALWAYS late to the party. It would be a shame to put trucks and grip tape on these wonderful works of art but it sounds like the only way to get your hands on them will be through ebay. Anyway, be sure to follow Brandon VIA the links below and go check out his OFFICIAL STORE to get your hands on some amazing stuff that IS available. (We highly recommend his book Symptomatica. We have it and look at it all the time, absolutely fantastic imagery!)
