When we first heard that MGM and Columbia were remaking the 1960, John Sturges-directed, classic western, “The Magnificent Seven” we thought they were crazy. Let’s face it, the original cast included Yul Brenner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Eli Wallach, Robert Vaughn and Brad Dexter, pretty daunting challenge to follow THAT crew right?
Well then we heard that the NEW cast included: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Peter Sarsgaard and Haley Bennett, well….we changed our tune. It also helps that the director, Antoine Fuqua, (Training Day and The Equalizer) knowns a thing or two about action films.
With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.
Antoine Fuqua’s modern take on the classic western, “The Magnificent Seven” shoots its way into theaters on September 23. You can stay up to date with all things “magnificent” via the following links.
