Universal’s Classic Monsters Get The Spusta Treatment In This Amazing Print Set From Dark Hall Mansion

Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Mummy, The Bride Of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and The Creature From The Black Lagoon are all synonymous with one word “classic.”  It is this group of “monsters” that Universal Pictures made some of the most beloved horror, science fiction and suspense films of all-time.   Names like Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and Lon Chaney Jr. are forever linked to these creatures of the silver screen and today, Dark Hall Mansion pays homage to them with an outstanding print set.

For this project, Dark Hall Mansion gave the creative control to one of their favorite artist, Marq Spusta.  Marq’s signature style has graced many a concert poster for bands like Widespread Panic, Dinosaur Jr, Primus, Dave Matthews and more.  Now he is focusing his talents on seven figures who have stood the test of time and still enchant fans worldwide to this day.

We reached out to Marq and he was kind enough to take some time out of his hectic schedule to give us a little insight to this project.

BLURPPY – WOW!  Seven Universal Monsters!  How daunting was it to take on seven of the most beloved monsters in cinematic history…all at once?

Marq Spusta – Well I appreciate that you used the word ‘daunting,’ as it certainly was a lot to tackle. Though it made sense for it to be a fully submersive process of going back in time with all these films and their original monsters.

BLURPPY – What was your process for tackling a project of this magnitude?

MS – One at a time. With each film I waited until it was a good night for me to really absorb one film and process what I could do with the character. Most all my chosen moments and compositions for the monsters came to me while watching the movie for the first time. (I had not fully watched any of the films prior to taking on the project) I would start most these films kind of late at night and then I’d usually do a really quick sketch to work out my intentions before I went to bed. I would then work out a detailed drawing over the next day or so, and those are what I’d would present to Dark Hall Mansion and then ultimately to Universal to make sure they approved of the way the prints would look. We got most the concept drawings together and approved before I started the final artwork on any of them, as I wanted to be sure everything was cohesive within the series, and approved by Universal. As I worked on the final illustrations I would have the film paused in front of me, jumping from scene to scene to study details…which are often hard to pick out as these films can be so darkly lit. The legacy of these Monsters was enough inspiration to motivate me through out the process.

BLURPPY – Personally, we lean towards Dracula but do you have a favorite out of this ghoulish crew and why are they your favorite?

1um

MS – Yeah, I’m kind of with you on Dracula being a standout. Just his whole creepy yet gracious host vibe, of all the monsters he is the most personable. Though Frankenstein’s Monster really starts to come out of his shell in Bride of Frankenstein, and that may be my favorite of the films.

BLURPPY – Great minds think alike. Lugosi was so iconic in that role.  Which of the seven monsters was the most challenging and why?

1-um6

MS – I’d say Mummy, since he is only in his wraps and walking for one short scene and that was the version of the monster character I wanted to illustrate in my series.

BLURPPY – What would you like to convey to the fans about this project?

MS –  I tried to have fun with it. These movies are such cornerstones and have shaped our culture in so many ways. While they were meant to frighten and thrill audiences, they were also funny, weird and extremely creative, and those are aspects I wanted to celebrate with my series of prints focusing on the seven monster characters.
